Types of Chinese Student Visas
X1 Visa (Long-Term Study)
The X1 Visa is issued to international students who intend to study in China for more than 180 days. This category includes undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, MBBS, and long-term Chinese language programs. The X1 Visa is generally issued as a single-entry visa and must be converted into a Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival in China.
X2 Visa (Short-Term Study)
The X2 Visa is issued to students whose study period in China is less than 180 days. It is commonly used for exchange programs, language courses, summer schools, research visits, and short-term training programs. Students holding an X2 Visa can remain in China for the duration specified on the visa and generally do not need to apply for a Residence Permit.
Required Documents for Student Visa Application
Before applying for a Chinese student visa, students should prepare all required documents. These typically include a valid passport, passport-sized photographs, university admission letter, JW201 or JW202 visa application form, completed visa application form, proof of financial support if required, and a medical examination report for X1 Visa applicants. Additional documents may be requested by the Chinese Embassy or Visa Application Center depending on the applicant’s country of residence.
JW201 and JW202 Forms
The JW201 and JW202 forms are official documents issued by Chinese educational authorities for visa application purposes.
JW201 Form: Usually issued to students receiving Chinese Government Scholarships or fully funded scholarships.
JW202 Form: Usually issued to self-funded students and students receiving partial scholarships.
Students must submit the original JW201 or JW202 form together with their visa application.
How to Apply for a Chinese Student Visa

Step 5: Submit the Application

The visa application will be reviewed by the relevant authorities. Students may be contacted if additional documents or clarification are required.
Step 7: Collect the Visa
Once approved, students can collect their passport and verify that all visa details are correct before making travel arrangements.
Visa Processing Time
Visa processing times vary by country and season. Standard processing generally takes between four and seven working days. Express services may be available in some countries and can reduce processing times to two to four working days. Students are strongly advised to apply at least one month before their intended departure date.
Medical Examination Requirements
Students applying for an X1 Visa are generally required to undergo a medical examination and complete the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. The examination should be conducted at an authorized medical facility. After arriving in China, some universities may require students to complete an additional health verification process.

Residence Permit for X1 Visa Holders
Students holding an X1 Visa must apply for a Residence Permit within 30 days of arrival in China. The Residence Permit serves as the student’s legal immigration document and allows multiple entries and exits during the period of study. Universities normally assist international students with the Residence Permit application process.
